Tournaments Proposals - May 2024

Summary

Because of a number of suggestions received soon after the end of our 2023 trip, this page
has been produced to reflect on those, before they are forgotten!
There is also a suggestion that the golf on the last full day should start a little earler, see the
details below.
The proposals below take those suggestions into account and are provided to encourage
further discussion.

Proposal: Table Tennis Competition

In future, play best of three games, up to 21 points, changing server after every two points.
If a game reaches 20-all, then a player needs to get 2 points ahead to win, server changing
after each point.
A handicap system will be worked out to make the competition more attractive to a wider
range of players.

The final to be played at 5 p.m. on the Thursday to allow a more spectators from our group
to attend. Additionally, suggest that the golf crowd could start their golf earlier on that day
to allow those interested to see the final.

An entry fee, with appropriate prizes would be similar to this year (2023).

Proposal: Snooker Competition

Start the competition one day earlier, Sunday evening, to allow the final to be played in the
evening before the last day, i.e. on the Wednesday evening.
This arrangement would work better, as snooker is deemed an evening game.
Given the nature of snooker, it would be difficult to work out a handicap system that would
make sense, therefore, no handicap system will apply.

An entry fee, with appropriate prizes would be similar to this year (2023).

Proposal: Racketball Competition

Most likely to be run as this year (2023). Because it is no longer possible to view games in
progress, the games would be organised as before.
Handicapping system yet to be decided.

Conclusion

All of the above is open to further discussion and refinement, and the intention is to give
all attending the Okehampton 2024 trip to gain maximum enjoyment.
Positive feedback is welcome!

Would there be an entry fee for racketball and a similar prize as Table tennis?

To answer: "Would there be an entry fee for racketball and a similar prize as Table tennis?"
- up to others to decide - JohnA?

My thoughts are, as half of the group play golf its difficult to arrange daytime matches
and racketball can no longer be viewed or sensibly played after a meal, it could be
replaced with a non-physical activity. Eg table football, pool, cribbage, 10 pin bowling,
adventure/crazy golf.

Racketball competition
New rules
Best of 3 games
Black ball only to be used
Play to 11 points 2clear from 10 all
All or some players will be seeded to ensure a more competitive match.
A prize for the winner

Padel competition
Assuming we have padel courts available at Trojans BEFORE we go to Okehampton next
year I propose we have a padel competition at Okehampton as we should have plenty of
interest and courts will be available. In view of this being yet another competition and
requires 4 players at a time the suggestion is all matches including the final is played on
the same day and probably in the afternoon in order to bring all players together.
We should be able to book all courts in order to complete all games.
Comments on all of the above please.

Table tennis
Should be best of 3 games
Either up to 21 points 5 serves each or up to 11 points 2 serves each. Two clear points
to win if 20 (or 11) each, alternate serves

Snooker
Can't see why there shouldn't be a handicap system based on number of points given
to each player at the start. Handicaps based on 2023 results

Racketball
Agree with what's proposed

Padel
Agree with what's proposed

John,

‘Seeding’ won’t ensure a more competitive racketball match. It only ensures that
the better players don’t meet in early rounds. ‘Handicapping’ will make the matches
more competitive.

With a Padel competition (handicapped?), will we be overloading the entire 5 days?
How do we get the golfers to sacrifice a day of golfing? As it stands, we have problems
fitting in 3 competitions now.
This year, I know that some matches were decided by a shake of hands.
Still time to think!

Bob
Racketball
Making it more competitive is a good thing as we are all competitive! Seeding does
the same thing.
Padel Tennis
You need to read “all matches to be played in one afternoon “ Keen golfers could play
in the morning and join padel in the afternoon. Introducing another competition adds
more choice. You don’t have to enter all competitions!

Racketball
Substitute seeding for handicapping. Good idea Bob

Apart from snooker and possibly racketball(only 1 court) why not set aside an afternoon
and evening to complete competition in 1day.
